Case Study - The Inn Scribers’ Project, Harlow

Imagine using an empty shop and the cream of Essex writers to develop a town's creative writing talents. That's what Barry Adams and the team from Inn Scribers did in Harlow after being invited to contribute to the first Harlow Community Arts Festival. Following discussions with Nick Bullions, the Arts Development Officer, the Inn Scribers rose to the challenge and this was the genesis of The Write Event.

The chief aim of the Inn Scribers, as listed in the group's constitution, is to foster writing in all its forms, to the benefit of its members. The aim of The Write Event was to extend this to all the people of Harlow, and beyond. The Event extended for five days, and was based in a previously vacant shop in Harlow town centre. Novelists, poets, and scriptwriters (several of local origin, but all of national repute) gave lectures, taught in workshops, and led discussions on many aspects of writing. Several weeks previous, everyone living in, working in, or visiting Harlow was invited to submit their own written work to The Write Event.

Eventually, about two hundred items of written work were submitted, including poems, short stories, articles, reminiscences, and even whole play scripts! A wide variety of items were selected for inclusion in a Harlow anthology. The Inn Scribers publicised The Write Event for many weeks in advance through local newspapers, local radio (two Inn Scriber members were interviewed on air), flyers, targeted mailings, and displays in the Central Public Library.

Financially, The Write Event was made possible by a grant of nearly £5,000 from National Lottery funds, through a successful bid to AWARDS FOR ALL. Several local businesses and other organisations also contributed in cash or in kind.  The anthology, 'Hidden Talent', was launched; it was seventy-six pages in length, printed locally, and was entered for the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WRITERS GROUPS 2002 Anthology Competition. The launch was held at Harlow Central Library, and amongst those invited were all those contributing to Hidden Talent. The event was not only well attended (well over one hundred present), but was very well received. The poet, Jayne Osborn, a committee member of the National Association of Writers Groups, was a major contributor during the Arts Festival, and at the subsequent launch of Hidden Talent.

The concept of The Write Event and the co-ordinator for the whole project, was a founder member of the Inn Scribers Group, Cheryl Vaughan. The undoubted success of the event was due to all of the members and to others, but to Cheryl most of all, Harlow is indebted..

Copies of Hidden Talent may still be obtained from Harlow Central Library, W.H.Smith's Harlow branch and from the Inn Scribers.
